Hi there!

It’s a whole new month, starting with a snowing point of view, the Sun saying no to coming out, and me dreaming it’s summer.

Here’s my reading highlight:

The Witches by Roald Dahl
3 stars

The Witches is one of my (two) favourite Roald Dahl books, the other being Matilda. I’m not sure why; I liked it so much growing up, considering the Witches hate children, but it felt like a comfort read.

The grandson and grandmother have a beautiful relationship. It’s a great answer to the question, “Would you still love me if I were a worm?” that was popular on TikTok a few years ago. The grandmother still very much loved her grandson after he turned into a rat.

Hello!

It rained heavily throughout the weekend, and it was lovely to stay home and read. I dreaded the start of the colder seasons this year, but the beginning of autumn hasn’t been too bad. It has been a pleasant surprise.

Here’s my reading highlight:

A Dip in the Pool by Roald Dahl

A fool’s bargain.

Hello!

I spent this week trying to fix my sleep schedule, and fortunately, I succeeded. As such, work has been relatively smooth sailing—the wonder of a good night’s rest.

Here’s my reading highlight:

Revolting Rhymes & Dirty Beasts by Roald Dahl
3 stars

This week’s highlight was short and whimsical, with two books in one. The collection contained only a few stories that didn’t revolve around humans; thus, I felt the collection would have been better aligned if it had been just those stories.

Hi there!

Unfortunately, the weather started to change this week and become colder. I’m grasping onto summer. This week’s highlight was catching up with friends over a hot meal.

Here’s my reading highlight:

The Hitchhiker by Roald Dahl
3 stars

This week’s reading highlight is a short story by Roald Dahl. This book caters to an older audience, which differs from the type of Roald Dahl books I’ve read this year.

The story centres around a hitchhiker who’s a ‘fingersmith’ – a pickpocketer at the top of his ‘trade’ who argues he’s as talented as any locksmith or blacksmith. It was engaging, and the surprise ending made it even better.

Greetings!

I spent this week finishing 错撩 by 翘摇, and I didn’t pick up too many English novels. I had a great weekend outside, with lovely company on a hike.

Here’s my reading highlight:

George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl
3 stars

A grandmother who likes to eat caterpillars?! Hahaha!

Reading Roald Dahl as an adult is an interesting experience. The author seems to dislike the elderly. In all his books, the elderly are rude and say mean things about the main characters, who are all children.

The prose was good, though – it was quite poetic in several scenes with fun rhymes.

Hi there,

I’ve been busy this week adulting, so I haven’t had my usual reading experience.

Here’s my reading highlight:

Matilda by Roald Dahl
4 stars

Matilda was one of my favourite stories from Roald Dahl (apart from The Witches). I have also watched the movie (and various versions of the movie) several times.

Now that I read the book as an adult, I am more aware of the author’s criticism/commentary. For example, criticism against the patriarchy is reflected by Matilda punishing her parents for their treatment towards her, which was rooted in patriarchal thinking.
